Micro-opportunistic Scheduling the Micro-boss Factory Scheduler
نویسنده
چکیده
A major challenge for research in production management is to develop new finite-capacity scheduling techniques and tools that (1) can account more precisely for actual production management constraints and objectives, (2) are better suited for handling production contingencies, and (3) allow the user to interactively manipulate the production schedule to reflect idiosyncratic constraints and preferences not easily amenable to representation in the computer model. This paper describes Micro-Boss, a decision-support system for factory scheduling currently under development at Camegie Mellon University. Micro-Boss aims at generating and maintaining high-quality realistic production schedules by combining powerful predictive, reactive, and interactive scheduling capabilities. Specifically, the system relies on new micro-opportunistic search heuristics that enable it to constantly revise its scheduling strategy during the construction or repair of a schedule. These search heuristics are shown to be more effective than less flexible scheduling techniques proposed in the Operations Research and Artificial Intelligence literature.

Look-ahead Techniques for Micro-opportunistic Job Shop Scheduling
Scheduling deals with the allocation of resources over time to perform a collection of tasks. Scheduling problems arise in domains as diverse as manufacturing, computer processing, transportation, health care, space exploration, education, etc. Scheduling problems are conveniently formulated as Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) or Constrained Optimization Problems (COPs). A general paradi...

In complex, large-scale domains such as military transportation or manufacturing, traditional scheduling technologies often prove inadequate because they rely on rigid and oversimplified models. These models cannot capture critical domain constraints, preferences, or objectives. They provide little or no support for dynamic schedule revisions necessary to react to contingencies (for example, ch...

1Over the past few years, several approaches to scheduling have been proposed that attempt to reduce tardiness and inventory costs by opportunistically (i.e. dynamically) combining resource-centered perspective to schedule bottleneck resources, and a job-centered perspective to schedule non-bottleneck operations on a job by job basis. Rather than relying on their initial bottleneck analysis, th...

Opportunistic scheduling ooers a uniform perspective on predictive and reactive scheduling as iterative problem solving processes. In the context of reactive scheduling, it constitutes a knowledge-directed alternative to more search intensive iterative approaches. By adopting a scheduling process that opportunistically focuses attention on the most critical subproblem and carefully selecting th...

Workstation networks are an underutilized yet valuable resource for solving large-scale parallel problems. In this paper, we present \idle-initiated" techniques for eeciently scheduling large-scale parallel computations on workstation networks. By \idle-initiated," we mean that idle computers actively search out work to do rather than wait for work to be assigned. The idle-initiated scheduler o...
